Betoverende zonsondergangen, spugende oesters en de lelijkheid van de mens. Het komt allemaal voorbij in de documentaire van de Nederlandse regisseur Pieter-Rim de Kroon: Silence of the Tides.<\/p>\n

Silence of the Tides is een bijna twee uur durende documentaire over het waddengebied, zonder muziek, met amper dialoog en zonder voorbedachte verhaallijn. De kijker wordt meegenomen door het hypnotiserende ritme van het water, en verliest hierdoor het besef van tijd. Je wordt uitgenodigd om je eigen narratief te fantaseren tegen de achtergrond van de prachtige beelden die De Kroon je shot voor shot voorschotelt. Hij neemt je mee op een rit langs de verschillende emoties van de mens. Van angst die je ervaart door een vechtpartij tussen zeehonden te aanschouwen, tot verdriet bij doodgetrapte eendenkuikens, tot comic relief bij een kibbelende lepelaar familie.<\/p>\n

Met de bewuste keuze van regisseur Kroon om geen achtergrondmuziek te gebruiken, worden de geluiden van net zo\u2019n groot belang als de beelden. Het is ook niet voor niks dat naast een video survey de crew voor de documentaire ook een uitgebreide audio survey heeft gedaan. Met zoveel aandacht voor geluid is het natuurlijk opvallend dat de titel naar stilte verwijst. Volgens De Kroon is het juist door de bombarie van geluid dat stilte kan bestaan. Chaotische sc\u00e8nes worden steeds afgewisseld met een rustgevend beeld van het water. Met deze steeds contrasterende beelden bootst De Kroon het idee van het tij van de Waddenzee na. Hoewel Silence of the Tides je constant laat wegdromen bij de wonderen van de natuur en de wezens die de Waddenzee bewonen, is het ook een documentaire over het raarste wezen dat af en toe het wad betreedt: de mens. Als je aanschouwt hoe organisch dieren zich bewegen, word je geconfronteerd met de kunstmatigheid van de mens. Met onze lelijke machines en gekke rituelen zijn wij de enige waarvan het gedrag niet te verklaren valt.<\/p>\n

Na afloop van Silence of the Tides zal de kijker zich voldaan maar onverzadigd voelen, moe maar wakker geschud en zal die in een roes van stilte de zaal verlaten om buiten weer keihard te worden geconfronteerd met de realiteit.<\/p>\n
